Delicious with lamb, chicken or beef. Something South African is the easiest way to turn an average meal into a tasty adventure. The land around Tulbagh in the Western Cape is some of the most beautiful and fertile to be found anywhere in Southern Africa. Tulbagh Tomato Bredie takes tomatoes and other vegetables grown in the rich soil of the region and adds herbs to produce a casserole enjoyed by the hearty inhabitants of this breath-taking land.
The secret and unique recipe was brought to South Africa in 1908 by Scottish chemist John Semble for production by H Jones & Co, a jam manufacturing company in Paarl. From humble beginnings in the Western Cape this well-loved product was originally manufactured by lowering muslin bags filled with herbs and spices into pots of ripe freshly crushed tomatoes. In 1927 it became the OK Bazaars best seller. On the first visit to South Africa in 1947 by reigning monarch King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were treated to the delights of All Gold on the Royal Train. 2008 marks the centenary year of South Africa's most loved tomato sauce brand, voted as one of the Top 10 Brands in South Africa...All Gold!
