Our Mate is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful flavour, which is extremely salty and savoury with umami qualities, somewhat comparable to soy sauce, made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It is similar to the Australian Vegemite. Our Mate, formerly known as "Marmite", a British version produced in the United Kingdom and South Africa, has a noticeably different taste from the product manufactured in New Zealand, owned by Sanitarium who obtained sole rights to distribute the product in New Zealand and Australia.

Bovril is the trademarked name of a thick, salty meat extract, developed in the 1870's by John Lawson Johnston. In November 2004, the manufacturers, Unilever, announced that the composition of Bovril was being changed from beef extract to a yeast extract, to make the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
